Wendy Holden, also sometimes known as Taylor Holden, is an experienced author and novelist with more than thirty books published, fifteen of which are bestsellers. She has also had numerous works transferred to radio and television, and four of her books have been optioned for film.

The Teacher of Auschwitz, Holden’s latest book, tells the remarkable true story of Fredy Hirsch, a young, gay, German Jewish prisoner who defied the Nazis daily at great personal risk to protect the thousands of children in his care.

At the dark heart of the Holocaust, there was a wooden hut whose walls were painted with cartoons; a place where children sang, staged plays and wrote poetry. Safely inside, but still in the shadow of the chimneys, they were given better food, kept free of vermin, and were even taught meditation to imagine full stomachs and a day without fear. The man who became their guiding light was a young Jewish prisoner named Fredy Hirsch.

Saxophonist Art Themen has been an engaging and inventive presence on the British jazz circuit for over 60 years. This living legend has played in the bands of Alexis Korner and Stan Tracey as well as on recordings with Joe Cocker, Jack Bruce and even Bing Crosby. Recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Worshipful Company of Musicians and shortlisted for the Jazz Instrumentalist of the year in the recent Parliamentary Jazz Awards, he remains as brilliant and inimitable as ever, with his trio featuring organist Pete Whittaker, formerly of The Nigel Price Organ Trio, and drummer George Double who has worked as sideman to Shirley Bassey and Jack Jones. The band’s groove-led re-imaginings of quirky curiosities from the jazz canon are a perfect vehicle for the twinkly mischief of this genuine grandee of British jazz and have delighted crowds at major London jazz venues including Ronnie Scotts, and across the UK. The Trio’s third album Live In Soho is released on Ubuntu Music and captures a magical night at PizzaExpressLive in Dean Street in August 2023.

For tonight’s concert, the trio are joined by pianist Jim Watson. Jim is co-promoter of Jazz@Jubilee and has worked with Sting, the BBC Big Band, the BBC’s ‘Strictly’ band and of course…Wet, Wet, Wet.

In a special conversation chaired by Northumbria University historian Professor Julian Wright, Gavin Higgins will be joined by artists including poet Katrina Porteous and singer Claire Booth to discuss the way words and music have come together in this new song book, and to continue the conversation about our contemporary sense of northern-ness and the notions of living at the margins.

In Gavin Higgins’ new work Speak of the North, poetry and music are woven with the sound of the folk violin – the Hardanger fiddle which once inspired the Norwegian composer Grieg in his exploration of the sound world of historic Norway. Inspired by the way Grieg deepened his appreciation of landscape and history through folk resonance, Claire Booth and Christopher Glynn asked Gavin to develop a new English song book, one that resonates in its own folk-inspired sound world, seeking out the rhythm and beauty of a contemporary English north and bringing that to life in words and music.

With its beautifully curated selection of contemporary poetry, the song book explores “northern-ness” as we might find it at the borders of England, in the derelict farms or mines of the Pennines, or the lonely heart of northern towns. This is a world where our minds are drawn to the border, to places where our own solitariness aches for space and music.

Reimagining the poetry of Gertrud Kolmar. An immersive musical journey with Professor Julian Marshall.

Beginning in 2007 with the startling discovery of the truly remarkable yet tragically little-known poet Gertrud Kolmar, who perished in Auschwitz in 1943, composer Julian Marshall set out on what has become a deeply involving, transformative creative journey. This has, so far, resulted in five works under the collective name The Welten Project – the seventeen-poem cycle on which all works are based.

In this evening’s presentation, Julian will share the story and process of this project and play a specially curated playlist of music.

Julian says about the event:

‘Towards the end of 2024, I began to feel that an event offering some sort of consolidation and contextualisation of Welten Project works written so far would be worth exploring. I had for some time become aware that from each of the five existing works there could be drawn a kind of distilled, concentrated playlist – a carefully curated compilation that could become a new ‘whole work’ in of itself.

This has now become a reality and I very much look forward to sharing this new endeavour with you – an evening that will take the form of an immersive listener experience prefaced by a short introductory talk and completed with a Q&A session.’

Julian is composer and a professor at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) in London, England.

Author and Journalist Simon Barnes talks about his most recent book ‘Spring Is The Only Season’ and some of the ideas involved – love, religion and poetry as well as butterflies, birdsong and climate.

‘Spring is not so much a season as the meaning of life – at least it is to all of us who live in the seasonal lands. I have walked in rainforest, in desert and in the African savannah and that has taught me that there is no greater miracle on earth than the coming of spring.

Spring can be found in birdsong, in the awaking butterflies and in the quickening of the land as the returning light and warmth sparks the growth of plants. Spring can also be found in great festivals of religion, ancient custom and sport. Spring is traditionally the time of love. Spring has been made still more vivid by the greatest artists that ever lived.

And me, I intend to celebrate every  possible aspect of the spring, for, after all, hope springs eternal in the human breast.’

Drawn from two years of Sussex retirement for the funeral of his friend, Dr Watson, Holmes returns to Baker Street to resolve ‘the last act’ of his epic career.
A theatrical evening then unfolds, with fourteen characters, all played by Nigel Miles-Thomas in a tour de force performance.
Cross-examinations, heated arguments between Holmes and Watson, and all manner of comic and serious interactions, between many famous Conan Doyle characters.
As the play concludes, the great detective reveals a shocking secret.

Let’s get singing this half-term!

Join award-winning singer, choir leader, and educator Tom Appleton this half term at Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall for a vocal workshop suitable for singers of all ages and abilities.

With music to suit all tastes, high-quality vocal warm-ups, Tom’s infectious enthusiasm and humour, and support from pianist Jonathan Rutherford this promises to be a family-friendly event not to be missed.

The two-hour workshop will culminate in an informal presentation – to which friends and family are very welcome to come – at 12.10pm.

At their mother’s memorial service, two estranged brothers start to piece together a sense of who she was from the stories she told them as children, and as adults.

Some were hilarious, some terrifying and some downright confusing. Did they help the brothers in their life path, or did they make the forest darker and the way less clear? Was their mother to be found in her yarns, like the old woman spinning in her gingerbread cottage, or were they a smokescreen, an enchanted mist that took you to strange parts and left you thrilled but faintly bewildered.

Untangling the web that she spun might bring them redemption and reconciliation, or it may shatter their uneasy peace for ever.

Saxophonists Derek Nash and Phil Veacock, plus guitarist Mark Flanagan have collectively notched up over 75 years of boogie with the Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. Together, they bring you a show full of swing, blues and grooves, going toe-to-toe for your approval alongside the rhythm section of Pete Whittaker (organ) and George Double (drums).

Saxophonist Phil Veacock is best-known as the main arranger, musical director and tenor saxophonist of Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. In this role he has arranged for and played with practically everyone of note in popular music from Paul McCartney to Barry White from Elvis Costello to Kylie Minogue.

Derek Nash is one of the busiest freelancers on the UK music scene. A multi award-winning bandleader, instrumentalist and composer, he has been with the Jools Holland R & B Orchestra for nineteen years and delights audiences around the world with his infectious and soulful performances.

Mark Flanagan joined the Jools band in 1988.  Since then he has made countless live, TV, radio and recording appearances with many of the biggest names in the industry.  Mark has also made a name for himself as a solo artist with his own catalogue of songs, written on Dobro and acoustic guitars.  Performing solo, or with a small band, Mark wows his audiences with fine guitar playing and songs written from the heart.

‘Lime and limpid green, a second scene now fights between the blue you once knew.’

And so, it began back in 1967 and the music of Pink Floyd has continued to intrigue, attract, and delight audiences for almost 60 years.

The Post Floyd Dream is at its nucleus, made up of 7 experienced musicians with a passion for this iconic band, performing the music in a way that will satisfy even the most diehard Pink Floyd fan.

Originally formed in 2015 for a one-off charity event in memory of a musician local to the bands Essex base, the band founding members decided to continue and expand the project. Since then, TPFD has evolved and developed with the current line-up being the most dedicated yet to achieving an authentic tribute to Pink Floyd’s music.

A two and a half hour set of Floyd classics spanning Meddle to The Division Bell including tracks from The Dark Side of the Moon and a few surprises for which mention must go to Pink Floyd’s drummer and founder member Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets touring band.

Audiences will be treated to a full stage show complete with lights, lasers, visuals, sound effects and stunning audio quality.

Expect “initial touches of baroque fusing with modern day folk” (FATEA) as The Finn Collinson Band returns to the stage in 2025.

Joined by two of English folk’s most in-demand musicians, Evan Carson (bodhran, percussion) and Archie Churchill-Moss (guitar, accordion), Finn combines a fundamentally folk approach with elements of early music to sculpt a distinctive and pioneering sound.

Traditional dance tunes meet historical melodies, shaken up in striking new arrangements and brought up to date with Finn’s compositions and trademark recorder style.

Together they create a captivating and wonderfully varied live show, with a respectful eye
on the past but a firm grounding in the present.
